East Africa Dairy Development Project (EADD) Jobs in Kenya

Background

The East Africa Dairy Development Project (EADD) is 4 year regional industry development pilot program implemented by Heifer International- Kenya and a consortium of partners including TechnoServe, ILRI, ICRAF, and ABS TCM.

The project is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of an agricultural development grant designed to boost the yields and incomes of millions of small farmers in Africa and other parts of the developing world so they can lift themselves and their families out of hunger and poverty.

The following positions are available within the Kenya Country Office:

A: Gender and Youth Coordinator

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The position holder will report directly to the Country Project Manager. The Gender and Youth Coordinator will work together with Country Teams to plan, budget, implement and monitor “out-of-the-box” Youth and Women targeted dairy enterprise programs.

The office holder will strive to ensure that project activities, outputs, outcomes and incomes are equitably distributed to benefit women and Youth.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the implementation of the EADD gender strategy in Kenya and revise strategy based on field experiences
  • Work with staff and partners to develop and implement a strategy to improve participation of the youth and women in EADD activities
  • Work with country team and resource persons in identifying gender training needs of staff and develop training materials on gender as well as coordinating staff training on gender issues
  • Facilitate the design and implementation of gender action plans and milestones based on the gender strategy and the existing monitoring and evaluation framework
  • Provide technical support (tools, methods etc) to implement activities that effectively integrate men, women and the youth and benefit them as participants in the project
  • Review of activities to ensure gender issues are sufficiently integrated into the training materials, annual work-plans and budgets
  • Work with the Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator to ensure effective monitoring and reporting of gendered indicators and milestones
  • Conduct regular monitoring visits to project sites
  • Ensure quarterly reporting on progress against the project strategies, with information on achievements, challenges and areas of support needed
Required Skills and Experience

Education
  • A Bachelors degree in Social Sciences i.e. Gender and Enterprise Development, Anthropology, Rural Development, Sociology, Economics, Agricultural Sciences or related discipline
Experience
  • Extensive knowledge in gender, agriculture and rural development, including demonstrated expertise in conducting gender analysis, gender assessments, and/or gender-focused research of agricultural issues especially related to dairy
  • At least 3 years of experience working on gender issues preferably in agriculture, rural development and/or livestock production and marketing
  • Previous experience working with youth and developing strategies for youth participation in rural development programs
  • Must be a team player and have proven ability to work collaboratively with people at different levels, including colleagues, partners and donors.
  • Willingness to travel extensively to the field
Language Requirements
  • High Level of proficiency in written and oral English.
  • Knowledge of Kiswahili is an added advantage

B: Investment Advisors

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The Investment advisor will work with the farmer business associations in tracking of Heifer and farmer investments in the chilling plants, ensuring that investments are sound and have reasonable returns within reasonable time.

Some of the primary key responsibilities include:
  • Carry out financial analysis for each investment by farmers and Heifer and advise accordingly;
  • Work on plans for farmers to buy back Heifer shares and the loans are serviced on timely basis, both for new and old investments;
  • Advise both farmers and Heifer on new and on-going investments, both strategically and operationally;
  • Support the dairy enterprises in measurement and performance of contracts, operational expenses, farmer payments, identification of other business opportunities related to the dairy enterprise;
  • Support the enterprises in enforcement of contracts with customers, transporters, service providers, maintenance and compliance with licensing and taxations;
  • Prepare investment reports to the management as required.
Qualifications
  • The investment advisor must have a bachelor’s degree in commerce or business related degree with knowledge on financial and business analysis.
  • She must have at least 3 years working with farmers either in credits or investments.
  • CPA section IV and above qualification is an added advantage.
C: Dairy Specialist

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The dairy specialist will work with milk chilling plants in an advisory capacity. He/she will prepare the quality intervention work plans in collaboration with the country project teams and will ensure that all activities planned for the period are in line with the project’s goals and objectives.

Some of the key responsibilities for this position include:
  • Support and advise the enterprises appropriately in terms of milk quality, quantity, sanitation in the dairy plant, and maintenance of the dairy equipment,
  • Assurances of food safety and HACCP practices within the dairy chilling plants;
  • Assess and recommend the training needs of the quality staff of the enterprises, transporters and shareholders of the enterprises;
  • Develop networking systems among the enterprises and external partners to include Kenya government ministries, parastatals and research and learning institutions;
  • Provide leadership in linkages with processors;
  • Supervise other dairy staff in the project reporting and more so on key quality interventions put in place with partners;
  • Produce project quality reports as required and develop annual work plans with the project teams;
Qualifications

The dairy specialist must have a minimum of bachelor’s degree in dairy technology, food science or equivalent and with 3 years of work experience in dairy sector.

D: Livestock Specialists

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The Livestock specialist will work closely with all stakeholders linked to the chilling plant on animal production intervention.

He/she will coordinate all production activities for some specific sites in liaison with senior livestock specialist.

Some of the key responsibilities for this position include:
  • Support the senior livestock specialist in driving the livestock production issues in the project
  • Implement training program that will improve success in livestock production
  • Train selected farmer groups in dairy production
  • Train farmers in cow registration and guide them on linkages to Kenya stud book
  • Provide and maintain accurate records that measure the productivity of selected farmer groups.
Qualifications

The Livestock specialist must have a minimum of bachelor’s degree in animal production, veterinary medicine, range management or equivalent and with 3 years of work experience in dairy sector.

E: Office Secretary

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The Office Secretary position will work under the overall guidance of the Office Administrator in performing all the office secretarial, cleaning and maintenance duties and other specified functions in consultation with the project team within the EADD Country office.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Reception and secretarial office within the Bomet Field Office
  • Ensure cleanliness in the office area
  • Prepare tea and clean the utensils after tea, ensure all kitchenette is clean at all times
  • Ensure there is enough drinking water in the dispenser for office use
  • Ensure that the office consumables and other kitchen items, goods in storage and the general office facilities are appropriately used.
  • Photocopying of office documents and correspondence coordination and documentations
  • Ensure the office is securely locked at the end of every business day
  • Perform other duty as assigned.
Qualifications

Diploma in Secretarial studies, information technology or business administration is required for this position.

He/she must possess:
  • Good English and Kiswahili language skills.
  • Sociable, team player, pleasant personality, self motivated, proactive in orientation and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • At least 2 years experience in a development oriented NGO environment will be an added advantage
  • Proven track record of office administration and secretarial duties in a busy work environment is essential.
F: Driver

Summary of Position Responsibilities

Under the guidance and supervision of the Administrative Officer the Driver will be responsible for safe and efficient driving of EADD vehicles. Ensuring high standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility and excellent knowledge of security.

The driver should have the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily logs, preparation of monthly vehicle analysis reports, ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.

Some of specific primary duties include:
  • Drive EADD vehicle(s) and execute the tasks assigned by the Supervisor
  • Ensure the safety of passengers and vehicle and observe traffic rules and road discipline
  • Manage the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle to ensure roadworthiness. This includes daily check of status of tires, brakes, engine oil, fan belt, etc and availability of spares, jack and tools.
  • Prepares daily log sheet and submit required monthly reports summarizing statistics linked to mileage, fuel consumption etc of the vehicle
  • Report promptly any defects or malfunctioning of the vehicle that require immediate attention to the Supervisor
  • Ensure that incase of accident, supervisor is informed and a police report is obtained
  • Ensures that regular service of the vehicle is undertaken
  • Ensure cleanliness of the vehicle at all times and assists the supervisor in planning and control (regular) services
  • Takes proper measure to reduce potential security threats to EADD staff, officials or property within the vicinity of the vehicle and along transport routes.
  • Perform other duty as assigned.
Qualifications
  • At least O-level education
  • Good English and Kiswahili language skills.
  • Sociable, team player, pleasant personality, self motivated, proactive in orientation and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Valid Driving License (ABCE Class)
  • Three years continuous driving experience
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repairs
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills
