Merlin is a British humanitarian organization, set up to provide medical relief, when people are at their most vulnerable.
Merlin has been working in Kenya since 1998 and it maintains a regional office in Nairobi, which directly manages Kenya programmes and through remote management provides support to Somalia country programmes.
Merlin is looking to fill the following positions for its office in Nairobi.
These are senior positions within Merlin program office that require persons of suitable experience and skills.
Financial Accountant/Treasury (Nairobi)
Overall Responsibilities:
  • Management of all payments and accounts to ensure that they comply with Overall review of all payments;
  • financial management of the operations;
  • coordination of all bank activities;
  • monthly cash/bank/advances/sub ledger/donor reconciliations;
  • monthly analysis of trial balances;
  • supervision of cash flow forecasts in Kenya and Somalia offices;
  • monthly reviews of field cashbooks and supporting documents;
  • facilitate external and internal audits and others.
Finance/Grants Manager (Nairobi)
Overall Responsibilities:
  • Ensures compliance to donor requirements, statutory and Merlin internal regulations for Kenya and Somalia operations;
  • Prepare/Review monthly, interim and final Financial Donor reports timely and accurately as per Donor reporting requirements and contracts;
  • work with the programs department to ensure proper budget management is in place;
  • preparation and review of budgets, budget amendments, budget re-alignments;
  • working closely with the Senior Management Team (SMT);
  • assist departments in preparation of annual budgets;
  • carry out analysis of spending per project for review of the SMT and advise on possible over/under spends;
  • ensure proper allocation of costs is maintained across the grants;
  • to review and monitor risk management processes and implementation;
  • ensure rigorous budgetary controls;
  • sub-grantees financial monitoring and support;
  • provision of in-house training to the field finance teams and others
Assistant Finance Compliance Manager (Kisii)
Overall Responsibilities:
  • Ensure effectiveness of the policies carried out in the field, procedures and standards by which the financial, physical and information resources are managed, by the programmes at the field level;
  • assist the Project Coordinator in grants management, monitoring and analyses of financial information on a monthly basis, carry out spot checks across the departments;
  • ensure proper support is provided to the Finance Officer at the field level, accurate cash and bank reconciliations are done on a monthly basis;
  • assist in assuring that all Financial Management aspects of Merlin projects in the field are compliant with the Kenyan law, Merlin Internal Regulations and Donor Requirements (including USAID, DFID, EC, UNICEF and Global Fund);
  • work closely with programs teams in the field on monitoring respective budgets;
  • assist and advise of possible over/under spends on a timely basis and others
Essential Requirements
  • Honesty
  • University degree in job related field
  • Previous experience in similar position with the INGOs
  • Ability to use Microsoft Software especially Excel and Word
  • Ability to work under pressure; Ability to travel when required
  • Experience of working unsupervised, taking a flexible approach to managing and prioritising a high and diverse workload in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of working with major donors (USAID, EC, DFID, ECHO, UN)
  • An understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of Merlin
