The Organization

Kenya Network of Women with AIDS (KENWA) is a grassroots community-based organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for women living with HIV and AIDS and that of their children.

KENWA primarily implements its programs in informal settlements both in rural and urban areas.

The Position

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Grants Accountant will be part of management team and will be responsible for maintaining an efficient financial management and administration system in accordance with financial policy, procedures and standards.

S/he will require experience in the management/operation of NGOs programs and financial reporting.

Scope of Work

Specific duties and responsibilities are:
  • Cultivate and maintain an expertise on rules and regulations of various donors and provide guideline in area of donor compliance;
  • Perform internal audits of the organization’s activities in all offices, including monthly reviews of financial transactions to check for appropriate documentation, correct account assignment and approvals.
  • Develop, review, update and implement effective financial policies and procedures for the organization that comply with GAAP, organization policies, all relevant Government and other donors policies, regulation and norms.
  • Manage all audits performed by external actors including collaborating with all organization offices to prepare appropriate documentation, responding to requests for clarification and take corrective action.
  • Participate with other management and other staff during the annual budget process and in the development of grant proposal budgets.
  • Consolidate monthly financial reports to provide timely reports on fiscal health, including revenue/expenditure reports, expense reports by grants, budget variance reports, among others.
  • Ensuring that all financial information and accounting procedures effectively and efficiently respond to the reporting expectations of donors.
  • Provide capacity building support to other accounting staff, program staff and management on all financial matters.
  • Advising the Programs Teams in relation to financial aspects of grant management. This includes participation in field visits, and giving financial inputs and guidance to the Programs Team, board and management.
  • Conduct and supervise compliance reviews of grant disbursements, in particular liaising with Programs Team to ensure quality of disbursement documentation.
  • Preparation of the staff payroll, ensuring correct computation, deduction and remittance of statutory deductions to relevant authority.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.
Skills and Competences
  • Be appropriately qualified with a bachelor’s degree(Business related) from a recognized university;
  • At least CPA III Section 5
  • Have at least 5 years working experience preferably with an NGO;
  • Have experience in the management/operation of donor funded programs;
  • Be very experienced in the application of financial management systems; including knowledge and experience in IT skills;
  • Experience in producing statutory Accounts;
  • Be a strong team player, with excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills;
  • Good management skills, including meeting deadlines, managing and motivating staff.
