AMREF Kitchen Assistant

For the last eight years AMREF through the Dagoretti Child in Need Project, dedicated itself to addressing the needs of children in vulnerable circumstances with a population of up to 34,000 children.

The project seeks to empower the community to deal with the challenges of children in need through the implementation of a community based rehabilitation initiatives that will strengthen the capacity of the community to improve the general living conditions and health standards of Orphans and Vulnerable Children.

The project is looking for an individual, who is well organised, highly motivated and results oriented to join a dynamic team and help bring better health for Africa. The position reports to the Project Manager and is based in Dagoretti, Nairobi.

Purpose of the Job

Preparation and cooking of well balanced meals for children and ensuring high standard of cleanliness in the kitchen.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Prepare nutritious and well balanced meals for children
  • Ensure high standards of cleanliness and hygiene are maintained in the storage, preparation and serving of meals
  • Maintain a record of all the children served with meals by the project – breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Inventory and asset management - maintain the kitchen's inventory, ordering just enough to make sure necessary ingredients are always on hand without any going to waste, and making sure everything is stored properly for safety and space efficiency.
  • Ensure all requisitions are processed properly and placed in designated area.
  • Maintain sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas.
  • Operate various cooking equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Train children in various methods of food preparation.
Qualifications and Competencies

The ideal candidate should have a certificate in Food Production. Minimum of three (3) years work experience in busy environment; experience in the health sector and working with children would be an added advantage.Must be ICT proficient. Must be quick and good in cooking different menus, have excellent interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to prioritise duties and work under minimal supervision.
