The Kenya Education Network (Network) (http://www.kenet.or.ke) is a not-for-profit membership organization that is licensed by the Communications Commission of Kenya as an Alternative Network Facility Provider.
KENET is the national research and education network (NREN) of Kenya and partners with licensed telecommunications operators to provide Internet services to public and private universities and other tertiary educational institutions in Kenya.
It also conducts ICT in education research and pilots innovative learning technologies in collaboration with faculty and students in member institutions.

KENET currently operates a national private broadband network connecting over 75 higher education institutions, including all of the major private and public universities. It operates a direct undersea fiber connection to London and peers directly with European research and education institutions through GEANT and other Tier 1 IP transit providers.
KENET is currently upgrading and expanding its national broadband network and setting up a network operations center and is therefore looking to fill the following positions:
Network Engineer
1 Position
This position reports to the Head of Infrastructure and will be responsible for the design, installation, maintenance of a variety of telecommunication networks used to provide Internet services to universities and colleges in Kenya.
This position is for an engineer with at least three years experience in the telecommunication industry as a network planning and design engineer.
Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • B.Sc. in electrical /electronic engineering degree or equivalent with specialization in telecommunications networks from a recognized university. The engineering degree must be recognized by the Engineers Registration Board of Kenya.
  • At least three years relevant experience as a telecommunications engineer designing, implementing and/or managing optical fiber networks
  • Experience in the implementation of wireless access networks will be an added advantage
  • Post-graduate degree in telecommunication networks will be an added advantage
  • Proficiency in UNIX operating systems and Internet protocols
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language.
Assistant Network Engineer
1 Position
This position reports to the Head of Infrastructure and will be responsible for the design, installation, maintenance of a variety of telecommunication networks used to provide Internet services to universities and colleges in Kenya. This is an entry level /trainee engineer position for recent graduate engineers.
Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • B.Sc. in electrical /electronic engineering degree or equivalent with specialization in telecommunications networks from a recognized university
  • The engineering degree must be recognized by the Engineers Registration Board of Kenya.
  • At least six months relevant experience obtained through employment as a telecommunication engineer or internship as a network administrator and/or installation of IP-based networks.
  • Proficiency in UNIX operating systems and Internet protocols
  • Experience in the implementation of wireless access networks will be an added advantage
  • Cisco or Linux network certification will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent oral and written technical communication skills in English language
Assistant Systems Administrator
2 Positions
This position reports to the Network Manager and will be responsible for the installation, systems configuration, network monitoring, and management of IP-based networks that interconnect universities and colleges in Kenya.
This is an entry level and training position for ICT graduates.
Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • B.Sc. in electronic engineering, computer science, information systems or equivalent from a recognized university
  • At least six months relevant experience as a network or system administrator
  • Proficiency  in  UNIX operating  systems,  network programming and web-based applications development
  • Basic knowledge Internet routing protocols
  • Cisco network certification will be added advantage.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language
Helpdesk Administrator
1 Position
This position reports to the Network Manager and will provide KENET members and partners with a single point of contact to KENET on all support issues.
The Help Desk Administrator will typically manage the requests via help desk software that will allow both the members and the KENET technical team to track user requests and resolve fault tickets for internet connectivity to ensure maximum uptime for ICT systems.
This is an entry level and training position for ICT graduates.
Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • B.Sc. in electronic engineering, computer science, information systems or equivalent from a recognized university
  • At least six months relevant experience as a network or system administrator or in ICT support.
  • Basic knowledge of UNIX operating systems, network programming and web-based applications development
  • Basic knowledge Internet routing protocols
  • Cisco network certification will be added advantage.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language
Management Accountant
1 Position
This position reports to the Executive Director / CEO and is responsible for providing management support in financial analysis, treasury management, budgeting and budgetary control.
The position will provide leadership in the budgeting process and analysis of the business performance.
Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • A business,  commerce or accounting  degree or equivalent from a  recognized university
  • At least three years experience in a busy accounting office
  • Must be a CPA (K); certification as CPS (K) would be an added advantage
  • Proficiency in the use and setting up of computer-based accounting information systems
  • Proficiency in all basic office computer applications, e-mail and Internet.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Demonstrated high ethical standards
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language
Office Administrator
1 Position
This position reports to the Executive Director/CEO of KENET and will be responsible for managing membership and donor relations, all the administrative functions of the KENET secretariat, keeping records of all meetings of the Board of Trustees and communications with both internal and external stakeholders as necessary.
Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • An undergraduate degree in business, commerce, or law from a recognized university.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of business law is required.
  • At least two years experience managing a busy office in the private sector or supporting senior leadership (VC or DVC) of universities
  • Proficiency in computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail and other collaborative tools)
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Professional qualification as CPS(K) would be an added advantage
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Kiswahili languages
All of the above positions will be on contract terms of three (3) years which shall be renewed based on performance.
An attractive remuneration package commensurate with the position will be offered to the selected candidates.
