International Federation of Red Cross And Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Senior Regional Communications Officer Job Vacancy

This position is a National Staff and a Fixed Term Contract Position.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Determine the communications needs of the Eastern Africa region and develop regional and country based plans and budgets to provide communications support.
  2. Build and sustain relationships with members of the International Press and other professional communications networks in the region. Design and implement activities, including high quality communications materials that result in broad visibility of our programmes, emergency response to disasters and advocacy positions.
  3. Maintain a database of National and International journalists and media contacts; ensure they receive press releases etc. Develop and maintain relations with key media; propose potential subjects and/or identify their needs and offer adequate solutions for media tours to IFRC and NS operations/programmes.

  4. Maintain a database on key stakeholders, donors and decisions makers on disaster and health work in East Africa and ensure key messages are communited in the right forums.
  5. Respond in a timely fashion to routine enquiries from the press and requests from other parts of the Movement for information.
  6. Assist in the development and maintenance of a roster of credible Red Cross and Red Crescent spokespersons.
  7. Write articles for internal and external Red Cross publications, including online channels such as www.ifrc.org or other corporate/internal platforms. During field trips take photographs to document the IFRC/NS programmes and share these with the media as appropriate.
  8. Reach out to wider audiences, including beneficiaries, through the use of the latest communication technologies such as web communications, social media and virtual communities, in line with IFRC’s Strategy 2010.
  9. Work closely with programme teams, secure and use their resources efficiently to ensure that quality promotional/marketing materials are produced to highlight our actions and results to partners and the general public.
  10. Work closely with information and communications colleagues in the National Societies to facilitate the development of their relationship with the media, production of communications materials etc.
  11. Contribute to and maintain a database of publishers, designers, videographers and other specialist technical communications contacts. When appropriate propose the services of these freelancers to the various departments, IFRC representations and/or NS
  12. Inform Federation colleagues of their responsibilities in relation to the media and disseminate guidance on this
