MicroEnsure is the world’s first and largest insurance intermediary focused solely on serving clients below the poverty line (BPL).  Begun in 2002 with the belief that risk mitigation is critical to poverty alleviation, MicroEnsure served over 3.5 million lives in 2009 across Africa and Asia. These products cover life, health, livestock, weather-index insurance for crops and property.
MicroEnsure has operated in Kenya since 2009, with other African operations in Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana.  MicroEnsure has experienced rapid growth since then and is seeking to improve its insurance expertise and brokerage leadership.
Reports To: Country Manager
Position Summary: The principal officer plays a critical role in the day-to-day management of MicroEnsure’s operations as well leading the organization’s financial management and interface with the Commissioner of Insurance’s office.
The associate will be expected to both contribute at an individual level as well as work with corporate clients for the MicroEnsure team—this role provides career advancement and significant development opportunities and the candidate will be pushed to grow quickly.  The role requires a self-motivated, productive team member interested in growing professionally in a rapidly expanding organization.
Primary Responsibilities:

Some responsibilities begin day one and are denoted with “immediate”, but many will require mentorship and expertise development from MicroEnsure staff as micro insurance is a new industry and are denoted as “developmental”.
  • Manage underwriting relationships in support of Country Manager including new product design, quote negotiations and client representation. (immediate + developmental )
  • Daily operations oversight for claims facilitation and premium collection from clients to underwriting partners. (immediate)
  • Implement and improve standard business processes in conjunction with the Country Manager for claims facilitation, client registration, reporting and customer care. (developmental)
  • Work with Country Manager, Head Office staff and underwriters to develop innovative new products and distribution platforms (direct, mobile phone, NGOs, MFIs, etc) to serve low income families more effectively and with broader reach. (developmental)
  • Assist Country Manager in sales negotiations with potential clients such as MFIs, NGOs, SACCOs, and banks. (developmental)
  • Execute financial management for MicroEnsure Tanzania operations and work directly with MicroEnsure Head Office team in Cheltenham, UK.  Initially, this will require personal deliverables for financial management, but as the organization grows will include management of finance associates. (immediate)
  • Produce and distribute monthly financial reports and budget variances and collate comments from managers. (immediate)
  • Represent Country Manager and MicroEnsure as required. (immediate)
Requirements:
  • Diploma in insurance or similar qualification per Insurance Commission regulations
  • 5-10 years of technical and management experience in the insurance industry
  • Experience managing corporate level relationships with insurers, MFIs, banks, and NGOs
  • Understanding of insurance products, administration and distribution channels
  • Significant experience and demonstrated skill utilizing MicroSoft Excel and Word
  • Demonstrated skill and experience managing and developing others
  • Ability to maintain sense of organization with multiple demands and projects
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Strong self-starter able to perform tasks with minimal input
  • Customer service oriented with focus on clients, customers, MFI staff, Country Managers and Head Office staff
  • Fluent written and spoken Swahili and English required
