Dock Workers Union Executive Officer Employment Opportunity

The Dock Workers Union is embarking on ambitious plan to restructure its operations as a way to improve services to its membership according to its 2007-2011 plan.
In this regard, the Union intends to recruit an Executive Officer, a senior Management Position.
Job Purpose
  • Organize, coordinate and represent the general welfare of the Union and its constituent membership and
  • Assist in organizing, coordinating and handling of the general operations of the DWU, induding the Human Resource Management.
Administrative Duties:
  • Under the authority of the CEO/General Secretary, coordinate matters of the Union’s organization systems and structures, Appointments, Performance appraisal and leave roaster.
  • Follow up decisions to ensure implementation of National Executive Committee matters.
  • Design and review the basic administrative structure of the Union, direction and control.
  • Design and develop human Resources planning and development programmes.
Trade Union Core Duties:


  • Ensure proper representation and arbitration of the Union’s disciplinary cases.
  • Initiate and engage regular meetings of the Union to resolve and discuss various Industrial and labour issues.
  • Prepare and circulate circulars to the National Executive Committee and members as directed by the CEO/General Secretary.
  • Update the National Executive Committee on Membership-Member registration and recruitment Programmes.
  • Advise the General Secretary on the Industrial relation machinery and interpret the same to National Executive Committee.
  • Coordinate the execution of events including meetings, workshops and other Union-related gatherings.
  • Act as a liaison between the Union and Key stakeholders under the qualitative guidance and authority of the GS.
  • Coordinate functions and activities of technical committees and advise appropriately.
  • Perform any other duties related to and relevant to the incumbency of the office of organizing Secretary position as may be required from time to time by the General Secretary and the National Executive Committee.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social studies or Business related discipline or certification in labour related discipline.
  • Desirable qualification in post graduate studies in the fields of management, Human resources or Business Administration.
  • At least three years in an administrative role preferably within labour institutions or Public sector.
  • Knowledge of labour relations and institutions Act, managerial supervision, organizational, negotiation and conflict management.
