Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Engineer

Job Purpose:

To coordinate and manage Concern Kenya's WASH activities in 3 arid lands districts (Moyale, Marsabit and Kajiado) and Nyanza Province

Main duties & Responsibilities:


  • Design Concern Kenya's five year WASH Strategy outlining specific hardware and software approaches drawing on current thinking in innovative water supply, treatment, and behaviour change on hygiene and sanitation.
  • Build capacity of and mentor national WASH Engineer to lead Concern Kenya's WASH interventions
  • Build capacity of Concern Kenya's partners in WASH sector to implement agreed WASH activities
  • Assess capacity of contractors and establish/keep updated a vetted list of preferred water contractors in programme areas and beyond
  • Secure complementary funding for Concern Kenya's WASH programme through networking and technical excellence
  • Establish sound monitoring and evaluation framework/plan for Concern Kenya's WASH interventions
  • Participate in intersectoral coordination and networking forums
  • Undertake any other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Country Director
Work Targets Set For This Post Over The Contract Period:
  • Approved five year strategic plan and one year annual plan
  • Approved monitoring and evaluation plan.
  • Capacity building of Concern and partner staff in participatory hygiene and sanitation approaches
  • Funds for at least 1 year of the WASH programme secured
  • Preferred list of competent water contractors established
Person specification:

Essential
  • Third level qualification in relevant discipline such as Water, Environmental or Civil Engineering.
  • A minimum of 3 years of practical, hands-on experience in implementing water, sanitation and hygiene activities as well as civil engineering activities.
  • Proven success in implementing community based and led hygiene and sanitation behaviour change.
  • Expertise on the design of low cost sustainable water supply, hygiene and sanitation; Public health training. PHAST training; Community Led Total Sanitation etc.
  • Experience with water testing and analysis.
  • Ample practical experience in solid waste management.
  • Experience of collaboratively working with partners, NGOs and UN Agencies.
  • Experience of working in isolated area in a multi-national/cultural environment.
  • Experience and proven results in transferring skills and knowledge through various capacity building technique.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
