Technical Assistant - Plant Health Division: icipe Jobs in Kenya

icipe is an independent, intergovernmental organization funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in the environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in Africa.

icipe has approximately 300 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya, and other locations in Africa, including Ethiopia and Sudan.

icipe requires the services of a competent Technical Assistant in the Plant Health Division under the project “Predicting climate change induced vulnerability of African agricultural systems to major insect pests through advanced insect phenology modeling, and decision aid development for adaptation planning.”

Responsibilities

Based at Duduville campus, Nairobi the


successful candidate will report to the Management Accountant and be responsible for the following key activities among other things;
  • Rearing and supply of cereal stem borer pests Chilo orichalcociliellus and Chilo partellus
  • Rearing and supply of maize stemborer’s endoparaitoids: the two biotypes of Cotesia sesamiae and Cotesia flavipes.
  • Assist scientists and scholars in their field and laboratory experiments
Requirements
  • Applicants must have a National diploma in Applied Biology with good knowledge in Physiology and microbiology.
  • Applicant must have at least 3 years experience in handling several cereal stemborer species colonies, their natural enemies and field data collection. He or she should have a good proficiency in the use of Ms Word and Excel software.
