Senior Financial Manager – IRS Kenya Project: RTI Jobs

We are seeking to recruit a
 Senior Financial Manager for the Kenya Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) project, part of a large regional support program funded by the US Presidential Malaria Initiative (PMI) through USAID. The Senior Financial Manager will be based in the IRS Kenya Nairobi Office.
Specific responsibilities:


  • Develop budgets for project proposals according to project needs and Donor constraints.
  • Draft financial reports (mid-term and final) respecting contractual deadlines
  • Guarantee the respect of Donor procedures for each financial contract.
  • Oversee the team and undertake appraisals of directly supervised colleagues especially the field finance assistants
  • Supervise accountancy procedures: filing of documents, allocation of expenses, vouchers registration, balance checking, etc.;
  • Verify and compile monthly accounts from each IRS project base or region;
  • Communicate accounts on a monthly basis to the regionaloffices respecting QuickBooks procedures and deadlines;
  • Oversee the management of bank accounts: follow transfers, check balances, check authorized expenses and online transactions.
  • Supervise the management of safes and cash: available amount, balance checks, security instructions;
  • Assess monthly cash-flow needs for projects and bases and communicate cash requests to the Nairobi Regional office.
  • Manage the presentation, circulation, filing and archiving of accounting and financial documents as directed by the regional finance control.
  • Ensure capacity building for finance team members in order to increase the level of technical ability and skills within the department to deliver IRS.
  • May be seconded to support both IRS and non IRS projects both within the country and in Africa.
  • Improve information flows within the department and with other departments and projects
  • Anticipate project financial risks and consult with the regional finance controller.
  • Work closely with the COP in providing leadership and management for all IRS program activities in the country.
  • Work closely with the COP in ensuring project compliance with US government and USAID contractual and regulatory obligations
Required qualification and experience:
  • Master’s degree in business/Finance/ accounting or its equivalent plus 6 (six) years experience as an accountant or responsible for financial management of donor funded programs;
  • Experience in a USAID funded project is a plus.
  • Three (3) years experience as a Finance Manager will be added advantage.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • An understanding of and commitment to RTI’s mission and values
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members.
  • Excellent communication and drafting skills for effective reporting on program financial performance
  • Demonstrated ability to train and coach finance assistants
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate financial and monitoring skills of communities through capacity-building efforts
  • Familiarity with the USAID system, and understanding of donor and governmental requirements
  • Advanced proficiency in English and Kiswahili a plus.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with all clients, peers, and stakeholders
  • Culturally astute, respectful and tolerant
  • Demonstrated success managing and leading technical and administrative teams;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team-oriented setting;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to coordinate activities with officials from host country government, US Government, NGO’s, and other agencies;
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office Applications and any other accounting software e.g. QuickBooks.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to the field offices.
  • Experience in Africa, preferably in Kenya including project activity districts.
