Background

Oxfam GB is a leading international NGO working in over 70 countries to overcome poverty and suffering. With over 5,000 staff and dedicated volunteers, Oxfam is able to achieve the greatest impact to end poverty and suffering through combining emergency response work, long-term programmes for poverty alleviation and campaigning for lasting change.

The scale and scope of our livelihoods programme in Horn, East and Central Africa region is growing and covers a range of initiatives from food security emergency response to facilitating investment for pro-poor economic growth, working with local partners, government and the private sector across nine countries to overcome poverty and vulnerability.

The role



This is a strategic new role, which will take Oxfam’s livelihoods work across the region to the next level. You will build on the existing livelihoods initiatives across nine country programmes and set the direction and lead on a livelihoods strategy that makes change happen.

You will ensure effective coordination across our food security and livelihoods initiatives and work effectively together with the humanitarian, development and campaigning teams.

You will facilitate research, evaluation and learning to help the countries in achieve and demonstrate results, influence policy and to make key organizational choices about investing for maximum impact.

You will play a specific role in driving innovative streams of work on private sector engagement for pro-poor development and women’s economic empowerment, building capacity across countries in those areas as required.

What we’re looking for

You will have strategic management skills and relevant leadership experience within a large organisation. You will have concrete experience in private sector engagement and approaches, preferably in the area of sustainable livelihoods development.

You will have in-depth conceptual understanding, strong research and analytical skills and a true passion for enhancing programme learning. You understand humanitarian and campaigns work as well as longer-term development programmes and have the networking and influencing skills to bring a diverse range of stakeholders on board to achieve common aims.

Ideally you will have experience of working in Horn and East Africa on similar issues. You must also be willing to travel to support country-level work as required.
