Programme Manager for Francophone Countries in Africa: Diakonia Jobs

Diakonia is the joint agency for international development aid founded by five Swedish churches in 1966 and working with partner organisations in about 32 countries with six regional offices across the world. The base for Diakonia’s work is people’s will to improve and change the world.

Fundamental thematic areas for Diakonia are human rights, democracy, gender equity, social and economic justice and conflict and justice. Diakonia is in the process of merging the Eastern & Southern Africa region and West and Central Africa region to become one with its regional office in Nairobi. The position will be based in Nairobi and report to the Regional Manager.


The individual is to provide leadership in the design, coordination, development, implementation and administration of the country programmes in African French speaking countries of Burkina Faso, Mali and DRC.


Major Responsibilities:
  • Lead, develop and co-ordinate operations within designated programmes, in alignment with established guidelines, policy, long term strategy planning, budgets and other steering documents.
  • Be the employer’s representative with personnel and managerial responsibility, including gender equity as well as with working environment responsibility
  • Establish, strengthen and sustain designated country offices and ensure that Diakonia’s rules and regulations for the organisation’s work are enforced and followed
  • To participate in decisions regarding budget on programme level.
  • Develop Diakonia’s fund raising in francophone Africa and manage and maintain contracts and contacts with back-donors
  • Lead the current organizational development process in the designated countries
  • Establish and strengthen regional programmes across the Region Africa, with special focus on francophone Africa
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A Masters degree in Development or Social Sciences or related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years progressive relevant experience in development work in a developing country with 2 years experience of managerial responsibility
  • Managerial and human resources leadership experience (including gender equity), with a proven good track record and multi cultural orientation
  • Proven competence and experience in strategic planning of development programmes
  • Experience in leading administrative and financial processes; budgets, reporting, resource management etc.
  • Excellent proposal and report writing skills and good networking and negotiation skills
  • Excellent spoken and written French and English
  • Good knowledge of computer application packages and the internet
  • Be ready and willing to travel
  • The initial contract will be for 2 years fixed term with possibility of extension. Availability should be immediately
