Primary Purpose and Function

The Monitoring and Evaluation Manager will be responsible for implementing the M&E system and all reporting for the Kenya program in accordance with the contractual obligations to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Track, organize and compile all relevant data to support the Coffee Initiative Kenya targets and impact.
  • Manage the management of information to support the Cl understanding of how the project objectives are impacting the livelihoods of Coffee farmers and communities.
  • Review the quality of existing social and economic data in the project area, the methods of collecting it, and the degree to which it will provide good baseline statistics for impact evaluation.
  • Ensure all data communicated is accurate and fact checked.
  • Continue to develop and improve upon the M&E system, which satisfies rigorous industry standards.
  • Draw up TORs, design and costs out impact evaluation surveys as needed.
  • Recruit, guide and supervise organizations that are contracted to implement surveys and studies required for evaluating project effects and impacts.
  • Clarify the core information needs of central project management.
  • Ensure that all critical operational systems have the appropriate specifications, are prepared in a timely and accurate manner,
  • Review monitoring reports; analyze them for impact evaluation and identify the causes of potential bottlenecks in project implementation.
  • Coordinate with other M&E Managers in Rwanda, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
  • Undertake regular visits to the field to support implementation of M&E, ensure quality control and identify where adaptations might be needed.
  • Submit required analytical reports on progress — including indications of planned actions on time.
  • Ensure the planning of and participate in key reflection moments — in particular, the annual project reviews.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in business, economics, and/or development from a top-tiered school preferred.
  • Preferred 3—5 years of private sector experience and/or at least 2 years of M&E related experience.
  • Solid understanding of sustainable rural development and social impact indicators.
  • Ability to train, organize and mentor staff.
  • Experience negotiating contracts and managing third party contractors ideal.
  • Experience developing frameworks for evaluations and data collection tools to support M&E efforts desired.
  • Excellent analytical skills with experience in quantitative data analysis and data management preferable.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative/risks to move the project forward.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency in English (written/spoken)
  • Familiarity with and a supportive attitude towards processes of strengthening local organizations and building local capacities for self management.
  • Experience living and working in a cross cultural environment ideal.
