Project Coordinator: East African Community - Lake Victoria Basin Commission Secretariat Jobs in Kenya

The East African Community through the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) Secretariat is coordinating the implementation of the Trans-boundary Mara River Water Resources Management Project which will be implemented in Mara River Basin in the Republic of Kenya and the United Republic of Tanzania for a period of three years.

The project will contribute towards the attainment of the Shared Vision for the Management and Development of the Lake Victoria Basin through strengthening of the regional and national institutions for governance of trans-boundary resources in the basin; and facilitating public and private environmentally friendly investments in the Mara River Basin.

The project has received funding from the Government of the United States of America through USAID/EA. The funding is intended to improve the management of the Mara River Basin as a trans-boundary resource.

The LVBC Secretariat will be responsible for overall coordination of this project and it intends to use part of the funds to constitute a Project Coordination Unit which shall be led by a Project Coordinator fully responsible for steering the project on daily basis.

The LVBC Secretariat hereby invites applications from suitably qualified citizens of the East African Community for the following position:

Project Coordinator

Grade: P3
Reports to: Deputy Executive Secretary (PP)

Duration of Contract: 1 Year, Renewable pending satisfactory performance and availability of funds

Station: LVBC Secretariat Headquarters, Kisumu, Kenya

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Overall coordination of the project;
  • Establish collaboration with key institutions in the Mara River Basin institutions to improve protection and management of Mau forest resources and Mara riverine forests;
  • Facilitate the establishment of the trans-boundary water monitoring guidelines;
  • Facilitate the development of the Mara river basin water catchment management strategy to improve water resources management in the basin;
  • Plan harmonized project implementation schedules and work plans and budget in the two Partner States;
  • Facilitate project meetings and prepare (annual) project progress reports;
  • Ensure the implementation of strategies for information dissemination and feed back on the project activities to end users and /or stakeholders;
  • Supervise project staff;
  • Promote a positive corporate culture and image of the LVBC and the EAC;
  • Any other duties as shall be assigned by the Deputy Executive Secretary or the Executive Secretary.

Qualifications and Experience

  • An advanced university degree, preferably a PhD in Environmental Sciences/Engineering, Natural Resources Management/Economics, or related fields but with a greater understanding of global environmental scientific issues;
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in Project Development and Management Environment, of which at least 7 should be at senior Management level;
  • Experience working with programs involving complex shared ecosystem and technical environment will be an added advantage;
  • Must have proven and demonstrated good knowledge of the project area;
  • Must have good interpersonal skills, ability to work in a multicultural, multi–ethnic environment and to maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of all aspects related to integrated water resources management (IWRM) or Integrated Lake Basin Management (ILBM) – planning and requisite implementation;
  • Dynamic, innovative and able to work with minimum supervision;
  • Excellent and demonstrable Information Communications Technology skills: including proficiency with main office software and knowledge of databases management and information systems and Internet tools.
