The position: 

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit an agricultural economics postdoctoral scientist to conduct research on scenarios of livestock futures and their impacts on food security, ecosystems services, greenhouse gas emissions and livelihoods.

The candidate will be responsible of improving a widely-used partial equilibrium model (IMPACT-Water) so that the model incorporates adequately the global livestock sector and its multiple uses of resources, feedbacks with other components and others.

The candidate, together with the project team, will also assess the impacts of selected regional livestock technologies on livestock product supply and demand, product prices, ecosystems functions and malnutrition.

Main responsibilities include: 

Specifically, the successful applicant, working closely with the multi-disciplinary and multi-organizational team will be expected to:
  • Prepare a report on promising new technologies for livestock systems, for eventual inclusion in an edited book. This report will include information on the characteristics of livestock systems that could be improved and the expected contributions to and trade-offs between ecosystem services such as food production, water conservation, soil quality, greenhouse gas emissions and livelihoods. This publication will include assessment of estimated productivity impacts for the new technologies over time under alternative research funding scenarios
  • Based on consultation with ILRI scientists and with a 10 node high performance computing cluster, develop and test virtual scenarios of livestock systems change in different regions. This includes the development of appropriate input/output coefficients for representing the different technologies and their impacts on livestock, livelihoods and the environment
  • The post-doctoral fellow will work in consultation with IMPACT developers at IFPRI to supply one of the following enhancements to the IMPACT model (the IMPACT Improvement Task):
  1. Improved livestock sector demand and supply systems that incorporate theoretical consistency of underlying parameter
  2. Links to general equilibrium models to and from IMPACT
  3. Explicit welfare measures and technology adoption modeling
Preferred Skills:
  • A recent PhD degree in Agricultural Economics
  • Proven knowledge and ability to develop and program partial and general equilibrium models
  • Proven knowledge of livestock systems in the developing world. A background or a first degree in livestock science would be an asset
  • Highly developed GAMS modeling skills
  • Demonstrated skills in quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in developing countries
  • A good publications record with strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • Spatial econometrics and GIS skills are also an asset
Post location: Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travel to areas where there are ILRI activities.

Terms of appointment:

This is an internationally recruited position for two years with possibility of one year renewal contingent upon six months probation period, individual performance and availability of funding.

ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
