Program description:
 This program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. Due to its rapid growth, the program has vacancies in the HIV Counseling and Testing Program – Provider Initiating testing and counseling within Nyanza.

Language:
 Proficiency in written and verbal English. Fluency in Kiswahili.

Essential Requirements:
 
  • Minimum D+ (Plus) at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education,
  • Certificate in medical laboratory technology from a recognized institution
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years working experience in a clinical or research laboratory
Desirable Requirements:
  • Knowledge and previous experience in HIV testing and counselling
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to work well in a team, and be able to collaborate well with the local Ministry of Health staff and other partners.
  • Fluency in both English and Swahili.
Job Summary: The Lab Technician will be responsible for collecting and receiving, verifying and analyzing specimens collected for HIV testing, and promptly report test results to the clinicians.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide professional support and mentorship to other health care workers in the provision of PITC including:
  • Conducting sensitization for health workers on HTC
  • Provide on job training, observation and mentorship for health workers in the health institution
  • Keep proper and clear documents and records of tests performed as per protocol.
  • Assist in the management of inventory for laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Maintain high standards in good laboratory practice (GLP), laboratory safety, and laboratory hygiene/ infection control.
  • Maintain highest standards of ethics, confidentiality and professionalism in the conduct of laboratory duties.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be assigned by project laboratory supervisor
Terms of Employment: 

Contract for 1 year, renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months. Salary negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.
