Accounts Assistant: East African Community - Lake Victoria Basin Commission Secretariat Jobs in Kenya

The East African Community through the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) Secretariat is coordinating the implementation of the Trans-boundary Mara River Water Resources Management Project which will be implemented in Mara River Basin in the Republic of Kenya and the United Republic of Tanzania for a period of three years.

The project will contribute towards the attainment of the Shared Vision for the Management and Development of the Lake Victoria Basin through strengthening of the regional and national institutions for governance of trans-boundary resources in the basin; and facilitating public and private environmentally friendly investments in the Mara River Basin.

The project has received funding from the Government of the United States of America through USAID/EA. The funding is intended to improve the management of the Mara River Basin as a trans-boundary resource.

The LVBC Secretariat will be responsible for overall coordination of this project and it intends to use part of the funds to constitute a Project Coordination Unit which shall be led by a Project Coordinator fully responsible for steering the project on daily basis.

The LVBC Secretariat hereby invites applications from suitably qualified citizens of the East African Community for the following position:

Accounts Assistant

Grade: G 5
Reports to: Project Coordinator

Duration of Contract: 1 Year, Renewable pending satisfactory performance and availability of funds

Station: LVBC Secretariat Headquarters – Kisumu, Kenya

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare payment vouchers and records as per the necessary approvals;
  • Maintain ledgers;
  • Hold payment Vouchers into the system;
  • Prepare cash book;
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations;
  • Reconcile control accounts and debtors accounts;
  • Maintain and reconcile creditors accounts;
  • Prepare monthly trial balance;
  • Assist in the preparation of end year final accounts;
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets;
  • Analyse, monitor budgets and provide information on the variances.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial management reports for the Donor;
  • Prepare monthly and annual VAT returns;
  • Maintain fixed asset register for the Project;
  • Perform banking duties;
  • Ensure safekeeping of financial records;
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Project Coordinator or the Executive Secretary.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Diploma in Accounting/Business Administration;
  • Must possess Part II of professional Accounting qualifications;
  • Minimum 5 years relevant working experience.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of computerised accounting systems. Knowledge of sun system will be an added advantage;
  • Ability to work as a team player with good communication skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deliver on the set deadlines under minimum supervision.

Age: Applicants must be less than 55 years old.
