AMREF in Kenya is looking for a qualified and highly motivated individual to join the USA-PMI funded project, which has the mandate to identify weaknesses and gaps in current clinical and laboratory diagnostic services relating to malaria and to strengthen them through laid down strategies.

Project Manager – Improving Malaria Diagnostics (IMaD)

Reporting to the Clinical Programme Manager the incumbent will be stationed in Nairobi.

He/she will be responsible for assisting, planning, developing and implementing activities to strengthen essential clinical and diagnostic services to support quality malaria diagnosis in Kenya and other IMaD focus countries in Africa.

Specific areas of responsibility will include:

  • Providing medical and technical expertise and oversight to IMaD project activities and ensuring high quality of project implementation in Kenya and other IMaD focus countries.
  • Coordinating and participating in health facility evaluations relating to improved malaria diagnostic services.
  • Developing educational strategies, training curricula and protocols and health learning materials addressing pre and in service training, and overseeing and implementing training and continuing education programmes for clinical and laboratory staff to strengthen quality malaria diagnosis in IMaD focus countries.
  • Participating in the development of national diagnostic policies and guidelines addressing malaria diagnostics and their utilisation.
  • Developing and strengthening national quality assurancestructures, systems and programmes for clinical and laboratory staff to support malaria diagnostic activities.
  • Participating, cooperating and liaising with all IMaD partners, AMREF projects, governments, institutions of higher learning, universities, schools of medicine and related fields, and other health agencies, both national and international, with the purpose of developing and promoting the IMaD project.
  • Representing IMaD and AMREF at national, regional and international fora.
  • Assisting in developing and conducting operational research relating to IMaD and AMREF objectives; analysing results and disseminating reports including publishing of scientific papers, and making presentations at national, regional and international meetings and conferences.
  • Assisting in monitoring and evaluating project activities, and preparing budgets and progress reports.

Skills and Competencies

A Bachelors Degree in Medicine, with a post-graduate qualification in Internal Medicine or Infectious / Tropical Diseases or Hematology and at least 3-5 years field experience, and hands on experience in implementing malaria development projects with a diagnostic component.

Excellent clinical and teaching skills with practical experience in programme management including managing budgets is also required.

Experience in operational research, publishing history and familiarity of written & spoken French and/or Portuguese will be an added advantage.

He/She should have strong interpersonal skills both as a team leader and player, proactive, excellent communication skills both written and oral, and cross-cultural sensitivity.
