Background

In Kenya low-level conflicts in pastoral communities combined with high rates of crime and banditry account for the increasing levels of armed violence across the country.

Porous borders in various parts of the country make the illicit trafficking of arms a catalyst to violent conflict.

The situation of armed violence and insecurity is particularly visible in the pastoral communities of north-eastern and north-western Kenya, which are characterized by drought-prone environs where basic resources are scarce.

Position Information

The overall objective of the post is to provide assistance to ALRMP II and the UNDP Kenya Country Office in the management and implementation of the project and documentation of progress and best practices as well as to provide programme backstopping support to small arms initiatives in the country.

Education

  • A Masters Degree in Peace studies, Conflict management, Security, Development Studies, International relations, Political Science or a related social science.

Experience

  • At least 2 years of progressive work experience the area of peace building or conflict management in a reputable organization at the national or international level.
  • Experience in working with projects and programmes related to development and security work.
  • Experience in drafting of project proposals or similar documentation.
  • Experience in working with issues related to small arms and light weapons will be an added advantage.
  • Adept at usage of computers and office software packages.
