The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, nongovernmental organization that carries out policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.

The Center seeks to fill the following vacancies:

Database Programmer

The successful candidate will have strong analytical and excellent communication skills.

He/she must be self-motivated, flexible with due attention to details and a team player.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyse, design, develop and deploy applications used for capturing and evaluating research data
  • Maintain and improve existing applications
  • Design and develop relational databases for new research projects
  • Enforce and monitor both relational and temporal consistency checks in the database
  • Write views to retrieve data for analysis as well as convert data to formats required by researchers
  • Design and update programs to generate various reports from the database
  • Train Data Entry Clerks and address programming issues encountered during data entry
  • Coordinate and monitor quality control during data capturing, including double data entry activities
  • Produce regular data entry performance indicators
  • Perform basic data cleaning in the database following data entry
  • Support Data Entry Clerks supervisors in managing the data entry process

Essential

  • A B.Sc. degree in Computer Science or in a data and information management related discipline. Diploma holders with extensive knowledge and experience of programming in Visual Basic and SQL will be considered
  • Experience in developing and maintaining applications using OOP principles in a .NET language (Visual Basic or Visual C#).
  • Experience in designing and developing large relational databases preferably using Microsoft SQL server
  • Skills in manipulating data: writing complex SQL scripts to extract, transform and load data in SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of EPI-INFO or any other data management application
  • Good communication and supervisory skills

Desirable

  • Knowledge of concepts in temporal databases
  • Report writing skills

Human Resources Officer

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in recruitment, selection, orientation, and retention of staff
  • Ensure all relevant staff records are updated and maintained and all staff files are safeguarded and kept confidential at all times
  • Work with the Human Resources and Administration Manager to manage the performance appraisal process and track HR budgets
  • Participate in development and implementation of HR policies and procedures
  • Coordinate generation of employee contracts
  • Generate information for periodical reports on overall HR status at the Center
  • Assist in determination of staff training and development needs, design training programs and ensure their successful implementation
  • Evaluate training programs
  • Ensure that employee performance standards are established and reviewed periodically
  • Identify strategies for strengthening interpersonal relations within the office and improving staff morale
  • Administer clearing procedures
  • Assist in finding solutions to employee concerns
  • Keep abreast with emerging trends in Human Resource Management
  • Timely follow-up to all related human resources matters

Essential

  • A Bachelors degree and professional qualifications in Human Resources Management
  • Minimum 3 years relevant working experience preferably in an NGO / international organization
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Ability to operate an HR Information System
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of Labour laws

Communications Assistant

Due to the strategic expansion in its Policy Engagement and Communication unit, APHRC seeks to recruit two communication assistants.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Publications:
  1. Develop content for APHRC non-technical publications i.e. newsletters, annual reports, brochures, etc. This includes gathering information and writing stories.
  2. Coordinate the production of APHRC publications i.e. dealing with graphic designers and printers.
  3. Circulate APHRC publications to relevant audiences – through mailing, workshops, etc.
  • Participate in mass media engagement through such activities as establishing and maintaining links with relevant journalists, interesting journalists to write/prepare stories in the areas where APHRC works and media monitoring, among others.
  • Provide communications support to dissemination activities both at policy and community levels.
  • Assist in managing APHRC’s library, journal subscriptions, and acquisition of literature from web-based electronic databases
  • Assist in updating content of the Center’s website
  • Carry out other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Essential (Skills and Qualifications)

  • Bachelors Degree in Communications
  • Skills or interest in electronic and new media as well as graphics/visual communication
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to translate complex scientific facts into simple messages for general audiences.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in MS Office Suite, and Desk-Top Publishing software
