General Description

DSW seeks to recruit an
Advocacy Officer to work under the Advocacy Manager in DSW Kenya Country Office. He/she will support local and regional advocacy initiatives and contribute effectively in the realization of the DSW Advocacy programme objectives and desired results. He/she will also work closely with the Youth organization/IEC BCC Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and technical support to DSW Kenya’ s advocacy work at national and local levels
  • Research, analyze, monitor and report on local and international policies and funding opportunities affecting SRHR in developing countries, with a focus on Kenya
  • Build positive relationships with, engage with and represent DSW to advocacy coalitions and other relevant stakeholders and constituencies in support of DSW Kenya advocacy programme objectives.
  • Under supervision of the DSW Kenya Advocacy Manager maintain a positive and supportive relationship with DSW colleagues and help coordinate advocacy activities with other DSW advocacy staff and partners around the world
  • Develop recommendations for advocacy at local and national levels

Required qualifications

  • A Masters Degree in Social Sciences preferably in Political Science or International Affairs
  • Proven track record in policy and advocacy work is essential
  • Proven presentation, organizational and capacity building skills in a multi-national environment
  • Ability to work effectively in teams, build positive working relationships and foster open communications
  • Evidence of versatility in writing ability and capacity to use normal office and data management software
  • Initiative, self-motivation and a commitment to continuously work toward improved results
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and oral is required. Good knowledge of French, German and/or other European languages is an advantage
  • Good knowledge of the functioning of the EU, including EC decision making procedures and EU development cooperation policies/funding is desirable

Youth Organization/ IEC BCC Officer

General Description

DSW seeks to recruit a Youth Organization/IEC BCC Officer to support advocacy work and coordinate youth organizations adolescent activities at the national and local levels. He/she will work in close collaboration with the Advocacy Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Advocacy Officer to organize tripartite consultative forums
  • Develop IEC /BCC strategy and create materials to support advocacy work at all levels
  • Facilitate interface between decision makers, youth and communities; document interviews and post online
  • Develop modules to build communication and advocacy skills for youth and partner organizations
  • Lobby adolescent and youth serving NGOs to capitalize on the youth’s potential in advocacy
  • Organize and conduct edutainment sessions to empower communities on civic responsibilities and rights
  • Coordinate and Lobby youth serving NGOs to engage and capitalize their potential in advocacy for SRHR

Required qualifications

  • A Bachelors degree in Social Sciences, Communication or Information Sciences
  • Interest in and good knowledge of Population Development and SRHR issues
  • Proven track record in rights advocacy, IEC BCC initiatives and ability to liase and work with the media
  • Strong IT skills and excellence in desktop publishing and design editing software (like Adobe Suite)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and capacity to contribute to advocacy briefing papers
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a group
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
